The NAACP is urging its supporters
to contact their congressional representatives, asking them to back
bills to restore voting rights to convicted felons who have served
their sentences. Currently, 46 states, including Maryland, and the
District of Columbia restrict the voting rights of ex-felons to some
extent. According to the NAACP, this affects 4 million Americans, of
whom 1.4 million are black men. "African Americans are
disproportionately losing their right to vote, even after they have
paid their debt to society," the NAACP said.
