Under pressure, NYC will destroy fingerprints taken during Republican Convention

Two weeks after anti-RNC demonstrators filed two suits against New York City for allegedly violating their civil rights, the city has agreed to one group's demands: the fingerprints of those arrested will be destroyed. On October 7, the ACLU filed the lawsuits on behalf of two groups of people arrested during the RNC protests. The suit alleges that the New York City Police Department indiscriminately arrested protesters, observers and bystanders who were "peacefully and lawfully" assembled on public sidewalks. Additionally, the ACLU alleges that police held detainees "in a filthy bus depot," unlawfully took the fingerprints of people arrested for minor offenses, and held arrestees for "unjustified and unexplained" lengths of time.
