Former Black Panther Fugitive in Canada is back in custody

Joseph Pannell, the former Black Panther alleged to have shot a Chicago police officer in 1969 before fleeing to Canada, was sent back into custody after a court appearance Friday in Toronto, authorities said. Pannell was ordered held until his next court date, which had yet to be determined, Gollob said. Marshall Drukarsh, a Canadian immigration lawyer representing Pannell, said his client would fight extradition to Chicago to face attempted murder and aggravated battery charges. The U.S. government wants him back on American soil to stand trial in the shooting of Chicago police officer Terrence Knox on March 7, 1969. Charged in the U.S. with attempted murder and three counts of aggravated battery, he was freed on bail, arrested the next year for jumping bail, and freed again after posting a $10,000 bond. He skipped the country in 1974 when a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to keep a court date. [more]
