Lawsuit filed in Disputed Deadly Shooting of Latino Man by Chicago Police

A federal lawsuit has been filed by the family of one of two men shot and killed last month by an off-duty Chicago police officer. Kenneth Elrod and Demitri Centera were shot during a confrontation at a stoplight on Chicago's Northwest Side. Elrod's family says the shooting was unjust. Police say the off-duty officer was driving his Hummer home from a bar at 2:30 a.m. when two men pulled up in a car and pointed guns at him. The off-duty officer killed both of them because, police say, they were threatening him and he feared for his own life. The attorney for Elrod's family doesn't believe it. He has filed a lawsuit, alleging wrongful death and excessive force "The witnesses that I've spoken to have indicated that they heard gunshots and all the gunshots came from the Hummer. They indicated that they never saw anyone point a gun, they never saw anyone fire a gun. They never saw anyone with a gun," said Gregory Kulis, Attorney for Elrod's Family. Elrod had been in a bar down the street earlier in the night and had been in an altercation with the off-duty police officer who helped kick him out of the place. Elrod then went home. His wife, Maria, has given police a signed statement saying Elrod called ahead telling her to get his guns ready. When he came home, he picked up two guns and extra ammunition.
