Greg Fuller: Orange Alerts Be Damned
I attended the Kerry/ Ewards rally at Heritage Park in Taylor MI , in the Detroit Area . It was a beautiful hot sunny day that started about 4:00 with people queuing up to get through the security . It was a great crowd of at least 5 to 7 thousand very enthusiastic people of all sorts of backgrounds many sporting the Kerry/Ewards " Believe in America " tees .
The event was well organized , a sort of big picnic complete with a band that could play Glenn Miller to Black Eyed Peas . You could "get your eat on" with free burgers and dogs or get your face painted. And if you so desired, you could have the American Flag colored in your hair or where hair used to be . It also featured both of Michigans US Senators ,Debbie Stabenow (who defeated the GOP incumbent last election) and Carl Levin . Congresspersons Carolyn Cheeks Fitzpatrick (Mother Of Detroit's Mayor ) , Sander Levin (Carl's Brother) and John Dingell (introduced Kerry) , were also on hand ; all spoke briefly and received enthusiastic crowd support .
Kerry started speaking at about 9:00 and though it had been a very long Day for him and his audience , he matched the enthusiasm of the crowd chants of Kerry , Kerry with a rendition of the points covered in his convention speech peppered with just enough local flavor , current events and conviction to keep it fresh for his enthusiastic audience who stayed for the entire nearly hour speech
The many of the locals , remarked that they have not seen this type of enthusiasm and crowd for a rally of this type since the 1960 's . Kerry also spurred the crowd to " turn off the TV and talk to your friends and family to get them involved " . If you contrast this " anyone can attend enthusiastic crowd " with a tightly choreographed Bush rally - it becomes obvious that this Country is alive with dedication to make a change - Orange alerts be damned
