Dr. Frances Cress Welsing Speaks at UCR: Racism and White Supremacy
In its continuing series of, "Voices that Need to be Heard," which features noted African American Women, the University of California, Riverside brought Dr. Frances Cress Welsing to the area.
Dr. Welsing is a noted Washington D.C. psychiatrist, whose study of race relations on a worldwide scale has produced numerous scientific papers and several books.
Welsing deals with the systematic injustices leveled on non-white people by a system she describes as racism or white supremacy. This practice, according to Dr. Welsing, is the fear of "white genetic annihilation," caused by the recessive genes that would end the white race if intermarriages with non whites, who carry a dominant gene, is allowed to run rampant.
Welsing, a graduate of Howard University's School of Medicine, first encountered racism in the work place when she interned at a mental health hospital in her home town of Chicago. She was told the Black patients did not have the mental capacity to respond to psychotherapy, therefore, they were only medicated.
According to Welsing, almost thirty years ago a group of Black psychiatrists held a caucus at which time they determined racism was the number one cause of Black mental health problems. "It is a system!," Welsing stated, quoting Dr. Nealy Fuller, who also had researched the subject. She also used excerpts from "The Soul of Black Folks" by W.E.B. DuBois.
In her three hour presentation, Welsing brought fourth much data on the subject, not based on hearsay, but biological and genetic facts from years of studying the most important topic in the world.
Things are not made better by avoiding them, but confronting them, she said. Welsing urged the audience to read...read...read... at least three newspapers everyday. You need the differing perspectives to make decisions for your life, the knowledgeable doctor stated.
Though many may believe that Welsing is stirring strife between the races by her candid premise of white supremacy being the root of subjugation for all non whites, she sees it as a tool that will enable each individual to become healthy, mentally and emotionally.
Commanding respect, yet aware that neither politics nor what is expedient for the hour will erase the system, Welsing forged on. Welsing also stated that equality and intermarriage are viewed as weapons to wipe out the white race.
Welsing urged that 9/10% of the population (nonwhite) to begin to work together. Under racism nonwhite have learned to hate themselves. This has been a deterrent to good working relations. "Within the confines of the African American community, we need to stop gossiping about each other, stop name-calling, squabbling, cursing, killing, robbing and selling and using drugs. We must respect each other. This also includes the male/female relationships," Welsing stated.
