Quanell X promises to appeal conviction

Community activist Quanell X filed notice Tuesday that he will appeal his misdemeanor conviction of fleeing a police officer handed down the day before. "There's no evidence to support this conviction," defense attorney Stanley Schneider said outside the Harris County Criminal Justice Center. The activist's lawyers said they will seek a new trial. Quanell X was in court Tuesday to complete paperwork for his sentence and arrange a $1,500 appeal bond. A jury convicted him Monday of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. State District Judge Brock Thomas sentenced him to six months of probation and ordered him to pay a $300 fine and perform 30 hours of community service. Imposition of his sentence will be on hold while his appeal is pending, his lawyers said. Quanell X refused to speak to reporters Tuesday. One of his lawyers, Robert Jones, said the activist would speak about his case during a Sunday rally at the New Black Panther Nation headquarters. [more]
